Mawnan Smith man Darren Griffiths is the latest recipient of a Behind the Scenes Star Award from Nalders West Cornwall Sunday Football League (WCSFL).
Hailed as "poacher turned gamekeeper" by WCSFL Secretary Bill Lamin, 33 year old Darren wins the award for his determination to rid the beautiful game of referee abuse.
Darren has played in the League for 17 years and has played for the MPAD team for the last six. Off the pitch he works hard to run the Referees’ Initiative and to make sure that every player knows about it. He briefs new referees on the scheme and asks them for the weekly club assessments. He also deals with any reports of bad behaviour.
The Referees’ Initiative was created to improve players’ behaviour on the pitch. The scheme really took off when the League was able to incentivise good behaviour by waiving the £55 affiliation fees. Sponsorship from Nalders LLP has saved the League’s fortunes since behaviour improved to the point where no affiliation fees were due.
Darren is surprised by his award. "I’m happy to help out as it’s nice to have responsibility behind the scenes and to be a part of something good in the League."
When asked about his conversion from noisy player to advocate of good behaviour Darren laughs as he says, "I’ve certainly matured! What’s the point of giving the referee abuse for 90 minutes? If something isn’t done, football will get worse. What the Referees’ Initiative has done is improve the game to the point that we’re getting excellent referees who want to keep returning to the Sunday League. In this day and age it would be impossible to do without Nalders’ support."
Bill Lamin, WCSFL Secretary nominated Darren for the award. "Darren’s persistence is remarkable and he’s just the right man for the job. The referees know him as most have booked him but these days he’s a true example, a real poacher turned gamekeeper!"
Wayne Bushell, Practice Director at Nalders LLP is pleased for Darren. "This kind of conversion is exactly what the Referees’ Initiative was created for and we are delighted to see such a vast improvement in players’ behaviour throughout the league."
To thank Darren for his voluntary hard work, Wayne presented him with a "Behind the Star Scenes Award’, which is awarded to the unsung heroes behind the Nalders West Cornwall Sunday Football League working selflessly to ensure their team’s survival.
