A local man who has ensured the success of the Great Western Railway Social Association’s Sunday football team for nearly 25 years is the latest to be awarded the "Behind The Scenes Star Award" from Nalders Solicitors, sponsors of the West Cornwall Sunday Football League.
Tony Triggs, who is aged 63 and lives in Truro with his wife, has held the position of Secretary for the club, which is part of the Sunday league, for nearly two and a half decades.
With four sons who have each played for the GWRSA team, Tony has never played the game himself, preferring to take to the sidelines and ensure that matches are well organised for others to enjoy.
Shane Teague, Team Manager of the GWRSA team who nominated Tony for the Nalders award said, "Nothing is too much trouble for Tony. He goes above and beyond the duties of a Secretary, helping with everything, from sponsorship and securing pitch fees through to sorting out a disco for the boys. He is more like a Chairman as he undertakes all of the Secretary’s duties and so much more."
Shane continued, "Tony is wonderful and if it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be doing it! In fact if it wasn’t for him, there wouldn’t be a team! Anything at all that I need help with, the answer from Tony is always ‘leave it with me’. These days Tony can’t make it down to the matches, so we call him to let him know how the boys have done or we meet at the club and I run through the game for him."
As a special thank you, Tony was presented with a "Behind The Scenes Award" by Wayne Bushell, Practice Manager at Nalders, which is awarded to the unsung heroes behind the Nalders West Cornwall Sunday Football league who work selflessly to ensure their team’s survival.
Wayne said, "Tony is an extraordinary man who has been supporting his team for nearly 25 years in so many different ways. The whole team is extremely grateful for his help as he does so much but won’t admit it. The trophy is just a small token for what in reality is a very big thank you!"
Tony commented, "All I do is contact the referees to ensure that they are available and contact the away side at our home matches to make sure they have all the information that they need. I’ve been mentioning retirement for a few years now, but I’ve been doing it for so long that it’s no trouble. I’m delighted to have been awarded this trophy, but there really was no need, I do it because I enjoy it!"
The GWRSA team’s home ground is Boscawen Park, where they are in Division One, playing each Sunday against other teams in West Cornwall. Having steadily improved over the past four years from Division Two, they were runners up last year in Division One, beaten by Tremough University side. This year the GWRSA team are determined to take the league!
