Local Football League Wins FA Award

The West Cornwall Sunday Football League (WCSFL) has won a national award from the Football Association (FA).  The award was presented to representatives from the League at the FA Cup Final on Saturday.

The highly prestigious Respect and Fair Play Award was presented to the WCSFL in recognition of its Referees’ Initiative.

The Referees’ Initiative was created by the League to improve players’ behaviour on the pitch.  The scheme really took off when the League was able to incentivise good behaviour by waiving the £55 affiliation fees, through support by Quality Solicitors Nalders.

At yesterday’s FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium, Chris Andreetti, WCSFL Chairman and Peter Lamin, ex-WCSFL Secretary Bill Lamin’s son, were presented with £3000 for the League together with a trophy.

After lunch in the FA Club Suite, the League’s representatives were presented with their award in a special ceremony in the Wembley Suite in front of FA Council, board members and the FA VIP guests. They received their award from the FA’s chief guest of honour, the Prime Minister, David Cameron.

Chairman of WCSFL, Chris Andreetti, is delighted with the award:

“I am so proud that the Referees’ Initiative has been recognised in this way.  Being able to incentivise good behaviour through our sponsorship from Quality Solicitors Nalders has totally transformed the game.  Referees are enjoying the matches once again because the player behaviour has so radically improved.  This award is the perfect end to the season.”

In fact the Referees’ Initiative was so successful with players behaving so well last season that no affiliation fees were due from clubs staying in the League, leaving the organisation in a financial fix as it looked ahead to the 2011 season.

Happily the ongoing sponsorship of Quality Solicitors Nalders ensured that the League could continue, and really benefit from the success of the Referees’ Initiative.

This is the fourth year that Quality Solicitors Nalders has sponsored WCSFL.  Wayne Bushell, Partnership Director at the Cornish firm, explains why they chose the League:

“The WCSFL have done an incredible job in cleaning up the game and has been suitably rewarded with this prestigious award from the FA.  Our sponsorship is a way of rewarding the League for its passion and commitment to the beautiful game.”

The FA’s Respect Manager Dermot Collins said the Respect and Fair Play Awards recognised those people in football who are supporting the FA’s Respect campaign and making great strides in improving behaviour, both on and off the field, across the country.

He said: “I’m delighted that the Football Association used the occasion of the FA Cup Final to recognise and reward those people from all levels of the game that are really making a difference in standing up for all the good things in the game.”

Last weekend the FA’s media filmed one of the WCSFL’s own cup finals on Wendron Football Club.  Sequences are going nationwide in the FA’s publicity campaign thereafter.

Founded in 1985, the WCSFL is celebrating its 26th year.  The League covers Truro and all points west and has 15 teams made up of players over 16 years old.
