FUND-RAISERS AHOY!

A TITANIC SPLASH

FOR PRECIOUS LIVES - FEB 2010

There were some puzzled looks from passers-by as Nalders’ Mary O’Donoghue and Mark Howes paraded outside the firm’s Truro HQ with their own highly original version of the Titanic, the ill-fated famous White Star liner.

Joining in the smiles was Emma Lloyd, head of fund-raising for the Children’s Hospice South West Precious Lives Appeal.

It was all part of a publicity photoshoot to celebrate the latest outstanding success for the Nalders Foundation, which was set up in 2008 to celebrate our 225th anniversary.

A White Star Line themed evening at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall raised £2,018 for the Appeal. This was presented to Emma in the form of a novelty cheque depicting the Titanic, which was a "star" of the big night.

One of the prizes in the very popular casino was a painting of the Titanic, created specially for the evening and personally delivered by the artist, Teresa O'Neill-Ellis from Dublin.

Over a hundred people from all over Cornwall and further afield attended the event, for which Mary and Mark were chief co-organisers.

It followed a "James Bond" night at the Museum a year earlier and took the total raised for the Precious Lives Appeal by the Nalders Foundation to over £16,000. Another big charity night, with a theme yet to be announced, is planned for later this year.

NALDERS HELPS

FESTIVAL CELEBRATE 40th

ANNIVERSARY IN STYLE

Nalders Solicitors are delighted to have sponsored the 40th Camborne Music Festival, which was an outstanding success with excellent performances and a record entry of over 420 musicians and singers of all ages.

The five-day event at Camborne Centenary Methodist Church finished with a flourish, with highlights including a presentation to a woman who has served Mabe Ladies Choir for over 40 years.

Mabe achieved the highest adult choir aggregate score in the festival. Beryl Perry, the choir’s oldest member and former chairperson, is pictured receiving a cheque for £200 on behalf of the choir, presented by Kirsty Rawcliffe, a paralegal at Nalders’ Camborne office.

"Throughout the week, so many people took part and contributed to the success and enjoyment of the occasion," said festival secretary Alvine Holmes.

The final evening included repeat performances by the most promising junior instrumentalists and vocalists prior to receiving their special awards and trophies.

Most promising pianoforte player was Christopher Bond, who also won the young musician award from the Rotary Club of Camborne for the second time.

Amy Campbell won awards for achieving the highest marks of a competitor aged under ten and also for the best marks as a newcomer to the festival .

Highest marks in the brass section were awarded to Simon Phillips and Helga Brass and the championship class was won by David Rashleigh, who delighted the audience with his singing .

There was special praise for Ken Andrew, who has taken part in every festival since 1970 and was presented with a pen and pencil set and certificate at the end of the finale evening to commemorate this great achievement .

PRECIOUS LIVES

FUND-RAISER HAS

STAR APPEAL! - OCT 09

Memories of the grand age of the transatlantic passenger liner will be stirred at the National Maritime Museum, Falmouth, on Saturday, October 10, with a big fund-raising event for the Precious Lives Appeal.

The "White Star Line Evening" will be the second big theme night to be organised by the Nalders Foundation, which was set up by the Cornish law firm’s staff last year to celebrate the practice’s 225th anniversary.

Those attending are being encouraged to dress up in fashions to reflect the luxury cruise liners’ hey day of the early 1900s, when the White Star Line operated over a hundred ships.

Many plied the transatlantic routes, with their passengers including large numbers of Irish emigrants. Fittingly, the Irish busking band Emerald will greet participants on arrival in the foyer of the museum for the big night.

Teresa O’Neill, Dublin-based award-winning artist and designer, has painted a 60 x 80cm picture of the most famous White Star vessel of them all, the ill-fated Titanic, which she will personally deliver on the night as a donated prize for the raffle.

The link is Teresa’s sister, Mary O’Donoghue, who co-chairs the Nalders organising committee with Mark Howes.

"Another novel nautical feature will be a 10ft-high ‘anchor’ made up of balloons inflated and assembled free of charge by Shelby’s Balloons of Newquay," says Mary. "It’s a big team effort all round and we are making arrangements to run coaches in from Newquay, Truro and St Austell.

"Cabaret singer Natalie Buswell, who is married to one of the Nalders partners, was a big hit at last year’s event and she is hoping to perform for us again even though she has just given birth!"

As well as cabaret and disco, the night will include a cocktail reception, buffet, fun regatta, deck games and fun casino. There will be live music from the band Area 51, with buffet and dancing later on.

"We are looking forward to another great night of glamour, fun and fund-raising," said Mark Howes. "Last year we had around 260 people from all over Cornwall and raised over £3,000 for the Precious Lives Appeal."

Tickets are available at £20 each and anyone wanting to attend, along with prospective sponsors, is invited to phone Mark or Mary on 01872 241414.

As well as support from the Nalders Foundation, the organising committee has so far secured four principal sponsors PTS, Datasharp, Norwegian Homes and Shortel.

LEGAL TEAM LAP UP

THE MILES FOR APPEAL

Eight women from the St Austell office of Nalders Solicitors have raised approximately £800 for the Children’s Hospice South West Precious Lives Appeal with a sponsored walk from St Austell to Fowey.

Aged from 19 to 64, the group completed the 13-mile coastal footpath walk in four hours in good weather.

They were accompanied by Jo Fitchett’s pet terrier, Digby, who not only completed the walk but also caught a rabbit along the way.

With Jo were Nalders colleagues Sian Morley, Manda Toms, Charlotte Kent, Vicky Rundle Wendy Billing, Michelle Griffiths, and her daughter Ebony Wellington.

The walk was done in connection with the Nalders Foundation, which was established last year to mark the practice’s 225th anniversary. Through the foundation, Nalders and its staff raised nearly £14,000 for the appeal in 2008 and the appeal has remained Nalders’ adopted charity this year.

ANNIVERSARY FESTIVAL

DOUBLE BOOST FOR 40th

Organisers of this year’s Camborne Music Festival have had a double boost in the build-up to this year’s 40th anniversary event with confirmation of an internationally-acclaimed adjudicator and the continued support of the sole commercial sponsor.

The adjudicator will be Dr Vivien Pike, UK member of the Choir Olympic Council and a jury member for the 2008 World Choir Games finals in Graz, while the Camborne event will once again be sponsored by Nalders Solicitors, one of Cornwall’s oldest law firms.

The festival will run from November 9 to 14 at Camborne Centenary Methodist Church and closing date for entries is September 19.

"Vivien’s appointment is a real coup for us – very fitting for our 40th anniversary," said festival secretary Alvine Holmes. "She is in great demand for solo singing, choral workshops and has a great deal of experience in the adjudication of all music disciplines at festivals nationally and internationally.

"She has taught hundreds of young singers and one of the first was Lesley Garrett, Britain’s most popular soprano.

"Her choirs have won many prizes in national and international competitions. She has sung in choirs from the age of seven and is a former member of the BBC Northern Singers and choir soloist with Sheffield Philharmonic Choir."

Mrs Holmes said the festival organisers were "immensely grateful" to Nalders for their continued support, adding: "Their financial assistance makes a huge difference and we more than ever appreciate this at a time when businesses are having to cut back on expenditure in the recession."

Ross Pascoe, Camborne-based partner of Nalders Solicitors, commented: "Camborne Music Festival is a fantastic 40-year success story and everyone involved in keeping it going deserves the warmest congratulations. We are delighted and privileged to be able to support such a landmark event that is of inestimable value to the Cornish community."

Organisers are confident that the event will once again attract more than 400 entries, all amateur, with a vast selection of musical classes of varying degrees of ability, providing a good ground for competitors to be professionally judged.

"The festival was an outstanding success and will have made sure that music continues to be nurtured and will resonate throughout the year in Camborne and Cornwall until it's time for "The Friendly Festival's 41st!"

She added: "Nalders’ financial assistance has made a huge difference and we have more than ever appreciated this at a time when businesses are having to cut back on expenditure in the recession."

Nalders partnership manager Wayne Bushell commented: "Camborne Music Festival is a fantastic 40-year success story. We are privileged to have been able to support once again such a landmark event that is of inestimable value to the Cornish community."

Festival adjudicator was Dr Vivien Pike, UK member of the Choir Olympic Council and a jury member for the 2008 World Choir Games finals in Graz.

Throughout the event, she gave extremely helpful comments and guidance in each class , emphasising her philosophy that it was the taking part that mattered and not the winning.

Niamh Lister , Emily Evans, Katie Maundrell, Lauren Bose and Kerenza Hurr delighted the audience with their performances from the recorder, brass, woodwind , string and vocal classes,.

Two new associate partners at Nalders - JULY09

Nalders Solicitors, one of Cornwall’s largest law firms, has appointed two new associate partners in Gayle McDermott and Lee Stutt.

Gayle hails from Strabane, County Tyrone, and handles general litigation with an emphasis on personal injury work. She joined Nalders in 2004 with experience including various positions in the City and West End of London.

She also worked for Greenwoods, an insurance firm in Bedford Square, and Bolt Burdon Kemp in Islington. Gayle is now based in Nalders’ Lemon Street, Truro, office.

Lee trained in London with Prince Evans, the capital’s largest dedicated landlord and tenant litigation team, before moving to Cornwall. He has been with Nalders since 2006 and specialises in commercial and property disputes, acting for Nalders’ wide range of individual and business clients.

His previous experience includes property litigation at Court of Appeal level and much of his work continues to be against regional and national firms. Lee is also based in Truro.

BIG BOND NIGHT

BOOSTS HOSPICE APPEAL - OCT 08

Three thousand pounds has been raised for the Children’s Hospice South West Precious Lives Appeal after a bumper charity night when the National Maritime Museum, Falmouth, looked more like a film set for a James Bond movie.

Suave Bond lookalikes, Bond girls, Oddjob, Blofeld, Pussy Galore, witch doctors and Russian soldiers were among the fancy dress characters briefly living the 007 lifestyle for the glittering event organised by Cornwall law firm Nalders Solicitors.

The Bond note was struck from the off, with an Aston Martin DB9 parked at the entrance to the museum. A replica of the Golden Gun and other Bond memorabilia was on loan from Treasure Parks retail centre near Redruth.

The James Bond Theme Night drew some 260 people to the museum, where cabaret singer Natalie Buswell sang a number of Bond songs from the first floor overlooking the specially created fun casino that proved a big hit.

After a cocktail reception on arrival, participants enjoyed a wide variety of activities that also included a disco and a "regatta" in the exhibit pool, with inbuilt fans blowing wind across the water.

This involved racing radio-controlled boats around a course and required skill and understanding of how to sail into or away from the wind.

The big night was put together with the support of principal sponsors PTS, NCI, St Austell Brewery, Maynes of Redruth, Norwegian Homes, Lexis Nexis and Treasure Parks.

Many other local businesses and individuals donated prizes for the raffle, casino and regatta. The raffle alone raised £679 and the overall £3,000 taken through ticket sales and on-the-night activities takes the total raised by Nalders for the Precious Lives Appeal to around £12,000 this year.

"The event was a terrific success," said Mary O’Donoghue, co-chair of the Nalders organising committee. "We are very grateful to everyone who worked so hard to make it all go so well, and to all our sponsors and everyone who attended and contributed to such a worthy cause."

The firm has adopted the Precious Lives Appeal as its 2008 charity to celebrate its 225th anniversary. The Bond Night was the highlight of a programme of events that has run throughout the year.

Nalders Foundation - MAY08

Partners and staff at a Cornish law firm are responding enthusiastically to a challenge to help raise £20,000 or more for the Precious Lives Appeal for a new children’s hospice in Cornwall.

A dazzling array of special fund-raising activities is being lined up for the coming months in aid of the charity adopted by the firm to mark its 225th anniversary year.

The campaign has been kick-started with a corporate donation of £5,000 in the form of a cheque presented to Emma Lloyd, manager of the Precious Lives Appeal.

Now personnel are preparing for a continuous stream of donations through their own upcoming big days.

Among special fund-raising activities already pledged, secretaries Anna Pike, Lisa Kingsley and Sam Sturdy are organising a charity horse show. Paralegal Alex Dunnett will indulge in a jelly bath, while Kathy Carr, conveyancing executive, and Lauren Attemere, office assistant, will do a sponsored parachute jump.

Led by family division head Peter Griffiths, a 15-strong relay team will clock up around 100 miles with a sponsored inter-office run – taking in Nalders’ premises at Helston, Penzance, Camborne, Newquay, St Austell, Truro and Falmouth. Luke Trevorrow, commercial paralegal, Ben Walters and David Usher, conveyancers, will cycle between the offices.

Conveyancing paralegal Liz Wilson is starting a sponsored slim in a bid to lose 1 stone in 6 weeks. Various members of Nalders’ accounts department will hold a car wash day in Truro and Ross Pascoe, litigation partner, will walk coast-to-coast from north to south Cornwall.

Well-known Cornish soccer star Dale Band, head of the employment department, is planning a five-a-side soccer tournament for 16 teams each paying £50.

Lucy Theobald, associate partner in charge of the Penzance office, is organising a marathon eight-hour line dance in Helston, hopefully with all her Penzance colleagues taking part.

Each member of the 14-strong partnership team is committed to raising at least £350 towards the cost of a new Cornish hospice, serving Cornwall and Plymouth – for which a £5 million appeal was launched last year. Nalders’ other 135 staff are being encouraged to "do their thing" for the hospice.

"This way, together with the corporate donation of £5,000, the nine partners, four associate partners and myself are committed to raising an absolute minimum of £9,900," explains partnership manager Wayne Bushell

"It is highly likely that many of us will raise a great deal more than the £350, plus there is no knowing at this stage how much extra money will come in from our 135 staff. So we are very hopeful that the final figure in the first year will easily be at least double the basic £10,000 target!

Cornwall’s nearest children’s hospice is currently at Little Bridge House at Freminghton, Barnstaple. Trustees have recognised a growing need to bring closer to Cornwall and Plymouth the special care and support required for life-limited children and their families.

LUCY TAKES LAW

FIRM TO NEW HIGH - FEB08

Cornish law firm Nalders Solicitors now has 13 full and associate partners – its highest-ever total – with the appointment of Lucy Theobald as associate partner.

Lucy, an girl of Hayle Comprehensive School and Penwith and Truro colleges, joined Nalders in 2001 and qualified as a solicitor three years later on completion of a part-time Legal Practice course at Bristol University.

She joined Vivian Thomas & Jervis as a trainee legal executive in 1999. She began her Nalders service at the firm’s Helston office, where she specialised in family law and became a member and then a fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives.

Lucy, who lives in Truro, moved to Nalders’ Falmouth office in 2005 and last year transferred to the Penzance office, where she is now partner in charge.

"Lucy has worked her way up the legal ladder in very impressive fashion and we are delighted to see that hard work rewarded with associate partner status," said Nalders partnership manager Wayne Bushell.

Her appointment brings the firm’s total of associate partners to four and reflects its continued expansion, with staff and business levels currently at their highest in Nalders’ 225-year history.

The firm is based in Truro, with other offices in St Austell, Falmouth, Helston, Camborne, Newquay and Penzance.

"This year we will be celebrating our 225th anniversary and we are very confident that the firm will do so in its best-ever state of health."

Nalders, now employing a total of 151, also has offices in Truro, Falmouth, Helston, Camborne, Newquay and Penzance.

LAWMEN SHAKE

ON IT FOR PRECIOUS

LIVES APPEAL

Two lawyers will give new meaning to legal fees when they shake hands with hopefully many hundreds of people over an eight-day period – and "charge" them for the privilege.

But Wayne Bushell and Simon O’Reilly, of Truro-based Nalders Solicitors, will not be taking the firm’s professional charging structure to a new level.

Instead, the pair will be embarking on a mammoth "shakethon" to raise a big sum of money for charity to help celebrate Nalders’ 225th anniversary.

They will be mounting their motor bikes to ride a double "end-to-ender" from Land’s End to John O’Groats and back, shaking hands at stops all along the way.

They will invite everyone they meet to shake their hands in return for a 50p donation to the Children’s Hospice South West Precious Lives Appeal.

The eight-day double-take of Britain will be in addition to sponsorship from friends and family back home for Wayne, who is Nalders’ partnership manager, and Simon, a partner specialising in commercial property,

The shakethon will then continue with various "shake" days in the towns where Nalders have offices – Truro, Falmouth, Helston, Newquay, St Austell, Camborne and Penzance.

"We will be spreading the Precious Lives message nationwide and sincerely hoping to raise a truly hand-some sum of money by shaking hands with a great many people!" says Wayne.

"We’ve no idea exactly how much we can expect to raise, but with any luck it will make a significant contribution to the overall Nalders target of up to £20,000 for the Appeal. Certainly, we will never have been so friendly and forward in our approach to people!"

The new Nalders Foundation has been established to mark the firm’s historic anniversary. Every member of the firm’s 14-strong partnership team is committed to raising at least £350 towards the cost of a new Cornish hospice, serving Cornwall and Plymouth – for which a £5 million appeal was launched last year.

Each partner and associate partner will devise a sponsored activity and the other 135 Nalders staff are also being encouraged to "do their thing" for the hospice. The firm itself has already donated £5,000.

Cornwall’s nearest children’s hospice is currently at Little Bridge House at Freminghton, Barnstaple. Trustees have recognised a growing need to bring closer to Cornwall and Plymouth the special care and support required for life-limited children and their families.

LAW FIRM ON MOVE

AGAIN IN ST AUSTELL - JAN08

Long-established law firm Nalders Solicitors is continuing its rapid growth in St Austell with the opening of another new office in the town.

The firm opened its second St Austell office in early 2005, but has quickly outgrown those premises at 2, Fore Street and moved on to a larger, newly refurbished base at 5 Church Street, St.Austell..

The latest move embraces two more new jobs, bringing the total staff employed in the town to 15.

The new Church Street office specialises in residential and commercial property and is headed up by equity partner Graham Ellison, working closely with associate partner Manda Toms who manages our other Nalders St Austell office, at 9a Fore Street, St.Austell.

"We continue to experience greatly increased demand for all our services," said partnership manager Wayne Bushell.

"The St Austell move will provide improved working conditions, with more space and comfort to facilitate continued growth through provision of the highest quality service to all our clients in spacious surroundings and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere."
