A Weekend of Firsts for Active 8
Cornish charity Active 8 has enjoyed its first activity weekend of the year sponsored by QualitySolicitors Nalders.
A group of ten young people with physical disabilities spent the weekend at Delaware Outdoor Centre taking part in a range of accessible activities.
QualitySolicitors Nalders is sponsoring a year’s worth of accessible activities on monthly residential weekends for the Active 8 youngsters.
The activity weekends are intended to increase confidence and independence skills, as well as to provide the basis for friendship between teenagers facing similar challenges.
A highlight of this sunny weekend was the group taking to a range of different accessible cycles, including powered, pedal and trikes. Every member of the group was fully involved and the weather was an added bonus.
On Sunday the youngsters were taught how to surf the internet and use social media more safely and their concentration was then rewarded with ice creams overlooking the river at Cotehele Quay.
The weekend saw many ‘firsts’ in the group: first time riding a bike, first night away from home, first time making lasagne. This is exactly what these weekends are for, to introduce the youngsters to activities that they can completely take part in.
Active 8 Trustee Liz Olive is delighted with how it all went:
“This first weekend of the year went brilliantly, we couldn’t have asked for more. By Saturday evening even the shy ones were joining in. The fun is in watching them getting to know eachother and sharing in the excitement and pride of their achievements.”
Wayne Bushell, Partnership Director for QualitySolicitors Nalders is pleased to be able to support the group:
“I’m so glad that we can give something that makes such a difference to Active 8 in the form of accessible activities throughout their weekends away. These young people are frequently excluded in life and it’s super to see them doing so much together.”
QualitySolicitors Nalders is sponsoring the accessible activities on Active 8’s residential weekends for the rest of the year. The activity weekends take place every month and involve a wide range of sporting, art and music activities as well as learning life skills such as cookery.
